Roadrunner Recreation Trail Support the Trail!
The City of Shelby has been
working for several years constructing a safe path connecting schools, work and
recreation opportunities throughout our community. Creating the Roadrunner
Recreation Trail has made Shelby a more walkable/bikeable community giving all
citizens the opportunity to increase their physical activity, enjoy our
communities’ environment and natural resources and seek an alternative in
transportation means. The path is nearly constructed with completion of paving
the bike paths along Oilfield Avenue and continuing north around Lake Sheloole.
The next phase of the project is directional signs, mileage markers, benches,
trash receptacles and points of interest signs. ROADRUNNER RECREATION TRAIL The City of Shelby has been working on the trail for well over 2 years. Thanks to the generous support of Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and the Montana Community Transportation Enhancement Program; Shelby Theme Committee and City officials and crew, the trail is almost complete. The trail begins at the intersection of Main Street and Coyote Overpass. The trail heads north on the bike path along Oilfield Avenue approximately 1.3 miles where it leaves Oilfield at North Lake Sheloole Drive and circumvents Lake Sheloole for approximately 2.6 miles. The trail joins the City Shop Road, continuing into Shelby on Galena Avenue and back to Main Street. The Roadrunner Recreation Trail loop is 5.06 miles paved asphalt with varied degrees of difficulty. The trail provides wonderful views of the Rocky Mountains and Sweetgrass Hills, takes you right through the natural prairies of northern Montana and provides great exercise and a lot of fun. FOR YOUR SAFETY Ø Prepare for a variety of weather. Even in the middle of summer, it can be sunny, but quickly change to wind, rain or even snow. This is Montana! Ø Wear a hat and drink water to prevent heat stroke on hot days. No drinking stations are available, so bring your own. Don’t forget the sunscreen. Ø No restrooms facilities are available on the trail so…. Ø No motorized vehicles are permitted on the trail, but biking is very popular on the trail. Stay to the right as you enjoy the walk. Ø Leashed dogs are welcome on the trail. Just don’t forget if they leave anything, it’s your job to pick-up after them. (BYOB-bring your own bags) Ø Farmers say there are no rattlesnakes north of the railroad tracks…nonetheless be aware of where you are walking. Ø Coyotes, gophers, badgers, weasels, antelope and deer have been known to frequent the plains of northern Montana, but there’s no need for bear bells. Call out, sing or talk loudly…you’re bound to scare everything away. Ø Thanks to the generosity of the Shelby Junior High Builder’s Club, benches are available along the trail. Ø Signs and trash receptacles are on their way as funding becomes available, so please be patient. The City of Shelby welcomes donations to complete our trail for the enjoyment of our citizens, visitors and friends now and for generations to come. Do it together…use the trail everyday! |
