RECYCLE SHELBY Why Should I Recycle? Recycling in Shelby benefits our community by reducing the amount of waste going into our landfill. A recycling trailer will be located at the north end of the Blazer’s parking lot. The recycling program in Shelby is a free service to the community. Responsible recycling is a necessity to keep this program operating. Maintenance of the recycling bins and trailer depends on volunteers who believe in this program. If you'd like to volunteer to be part of the Shelby Recycling Association or donate to sustain the program in Shelby, please contact Shelby City Hall for details. Recycling Paper The following items can be accepted in separate paper bins. Office Paper Other Paper * White paper *Newspapers * Copy paper * Magazines * Colored paper * Catalogs * Phone Books Please be sure office paper and other paper is separated. Sticky notes, index cards, notebook paper can all be included in the office paper bin. Recycling Aluminum Here are a few reminders for the aluminum bins. * The aluminum bins are for used beverage containers only. * Crushed cans are preferred as they take up less space. * No bags, sacks or boxes....CANS ONLY Recycling Tin/Steel Here are a few reminders for the tin/steel bin. * Tin/steel food cans only. * All cans must be washed out as dirty cans will contaminate the entire bin. * Labels and lids can be left on. Other Recycling Efforts Other recycling opportunities are available in Shelby. * Albertsons recycles plastic shopping bags. * We Do Re Do located on Main Street accepts aluminum can pull tabs, paint, arts & crafts, household items and clothing. * The Toole County Library accepts used books, videos, books on tape and CDs. * Shelby High School and Fieldstone Gallery accept ink cartridges for printers and old cell phones. The Shelby Landfill also recycles the following: *Tires: The cost is $1.00 for each car tire: $4.50 for semi-truck tires; and $20.00 for tractor tires. * Appliances: The landfill accepts appliances without Freon. The city charges $50.00 for Freon removal if need be. Recycling Facts * Recycling 1 ton of aluminum cans conserves the equivalent of 1,665 gallons of gasoline. * Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 mature trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 3 cubic yards of Landfill space and 4,100 kilowatt-hours of electricity…enough energy to power the average home for 5 months. * The 36 billion aluminum cans land-filled in 2009 had a scrap value of more than $600 million. * Someday we'll be mining our landfills for the resources we’ve buried. * Each of us uses approximately 1 hundred foot trees in paper and wood products per year. |
